Sleep & Dysfunction

Radiograph of Teeth

Proper breathing during sleep is a critical component of restoration and growth at any age. Sleep disordered breathing, including obstructive sleep apnea can significantly compromise the health of developing children. According to research published in The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, approximately 15% of children experience sleep disordered breathing, and 9 out of every 10 cases go undiagnosed. Frequently, the physical, emotional, and behavioral signs and symptoms expressed by children who have these conditions are disregarded or misdiagnosed.

The Role of Dentistry in the Treatment of Sleep Related Breathing Disorders

In 2017, the ADA declared that the role of dentist’s in Sleep Related Breathing Disorders (SRBD) includes “Screening patients for SRBD as part of a comprehensive medical and dental history to recognize symptoms such as daytime sleepiness, choking, snoring or witnessed apneas and an evaluation for risks factors…”

“In children, screening through history and clinical examination may identify signs and symptoms of deficient growth and development or other risk factors that may lead to airway issues.”
