LEARN MORE ABOUT HOW YOUR CHILD CAN BENEFIT FROM A FRENECTOMY IN ASHBURN, VA.
What Is a Frenum?
A frenum, also called a frenulum, is a small band of tissue that connects one part of the body to another. Frenums are found in several places on the body, but dentists treat the frenums found in the mouth, including the:
- Lingual frenum: Connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth.
- Labial frenum: Connects the lips to the gums.
Sometimes these small bands of tissue can be too short, too thick, or too tight, or be positioned too far down and cause a variety of issues, such as:
- Problems with proper tooth development
- Inhibit proper speech
- Constrict movement of the tongue or lips
- Make breastfeeding painful and sometimes impossible
All of these issues can be corrected with the removal of the frenum through a simple procedure called a frenectomy.
CORRECT TONGUE-TIES SAFELY AND QUICKLY WITH A LASER INFANT FRENECTOMY
Infant Frenectomy in Ashburn, VA
An infant frenectomy is traditionally performed using a scalpel and stitches, within a hospital setting. However, we provide a minimally invasive alternative utilizing a dental laser that significantly reduces discomfort and bleeding. In most cases, our water laser eliminates the need for anesthesia, making the procedure safe and easy for newborns.
We often perform a tongue frenectomy on infants as young as two days old who are having difficulty breastfeeding. Most mothers say their babies can breastfeed immediately following the procedure with a higher intake of milk and notice a significant increase in their own personal comfort while feeding their children.
The Benefits of a Laser Frenectomy
- In most cases, eliminates the need for sutures
- Promotes healing and reduces post-procedural pain
- Minimizes bleeding
- Safe for newborns
- No sedation or hospital setting needed
- Results are immediate
