Prevention

Prevention is always better than treatment. By actively preventing disease and decay through regular home care, professional dental cleanings and regular exams, you will maintain a healthy, beautiful smile.

In addition, effective prevention can help you avoid costly treatments in the future to remove decay, restore teeth and treat gum disease. Regular prevention is truly your best investment.

Regular Exams

Dental examinations help to diagnose disease before it becomes hazardous to your health. In addition, regular examinations can save you money by alleviating problems while they are small and before they become expensive to repair, or in some cases, impossible to repair. Your dental examinations generally include the following:

  • Oral cancer screening.
  • Evaluation of growth and development.
  • Orthodontic needs assessment.
  • Gum disease evaluation.
  • Visual examination of tooth decay.
  • Examination of diagnostic x-rays to see cysts, tumors, invisible decay and other problems that can't be seen by the naked eye.
  • Evaluation of status of current restorations (fillings and others).

We cannot express enough how important it is to see your dentist regularly.

Remember, preventing disease is always better than treating disease.

Professional Cleaning

American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry as well as our office recommends that children receive prophylactic professional cleanings every 6 months. Children and adolescents undergoing orthodontic treatment (braces) should receive professional cleanings every 3 months.

Digital X-Rays

Our ability to take digital x-rays is another method of prevention. With children, not all tooth decay is visible, and x-rays allow us to see areas in between the teeth that cannot be seen or felt clinically. You will be happy to know that by using digital x-rays we help reduce the radiation dosage to our patients by 80%-90%.

Home Care

All of our services are especially effective when we have discussed proper oral hygiene practices / diet at home. We ask that parents help children brush and floss their teeth. Parents should begin brushing their child's teeth as soon as the first tooth comes into the mouth with water and age-appropriate soft bristle toothbrush. As children become 2-3 years of age, parents can begin using fluoridated toothpaste and start flossing children's teeth as they are beginning to touch. We may also recommend a mouth rinse whenever required.

Sealants

Normal pits and grooves on the chewing surfaces of back teeth can trap food that can't be removed by brushing or washed out by water or saliva. A sealant is a tough, plastic material designed to bond (stick) to tooth enamel. We only use BPA free sealants.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride treatment and fluoridated water have helped children's teeth become stronger and healthier. We offer fluoride treatment as a part of every continuing care appointment. If you reside in a community that does not have water fluoridation, we also provide age-appropriate recommendations to incorporate fluoride into your children's diet. In some cases we may provide prescriptions for fluoride supplements to ensure the health of your children's permanent teeth in the future.

Laser Cavity Detection

It makes sense to upgrade your TV to an HDTV, right? When a new technology becomes available and offers better results, you invest in it and avoid being left behind. Ashburn Children's Dentistry knows that you want nothing but the best for your children. That's why we invest in the best technology to diagnose cavities and other issues before they become problems. The newest technological advances in our office are our SoproLIFE (Light Induced Fluorescence Evaluator) HD Intraoral Cameras. We use this Laser HD intraoral camera as part of every exam to evaluate what the naked eye and x-rays can sometimes not see. The camera can even illuminate areas of decay to help show you exactly what the doctor is looking at and pointing out when they have an area of concern, thereby being able to better diagnose treatment for those areas in their earliest stages. We make it easy to get the picture by showing you the picture.
